Why Is Psychology Important?

Well, the basics of psychology are the basics of all human communication. If you understand how a person thinks, how to influence them their thinking and communicate with them properly you can learn how to sell to them more effectively.

Everyone is driven by need and want. All have basic needs such as food and water but everyone wants the nicer types of food and drink. Wants drive emotions which may have been triggered by needs.

Understanding Need and Want

If you as the salesperson knows about need and want you will know how to use this to your own advantage and guide the prospect to buy your products or services. When someone walks into a shop to cover a need they may be unaware of their wants. By creating emotional connections and triggers to products you can drive a person from their basic needs and create want.

The eyes covert, through the eyes all see something that attracts their attention. So as a salesperson if you direct the person to a visual then they will start to subconsciously want that product.

Add in the Dream and the Ego

When you get them to mentally picture themselves with the product and how it will improve their lives, how it will make them look good to their friends and family and how it would be an outer display of one's success, you are adding the dream to their subconscious want and you are adding the ego of adulation of friends and family.


Who are you selling to?

The pictures you use on your website, in your advertisement, in your brochures are very important. When you place a picture of a person, in a context, you need to know and understand who that picture is actually selling to. For example. Let's take this picture right here. Let's say you have a picture of a beautiful girl in your photo, a young hot beautiful girl. Who is that picture going to reach? Well, it's going to reach two people. Obviously it's going to reach the obvious answer, men who love beautiful girls, but it's also going to reach girls who want to be that beautiful girl. That's the message you are sending with the picture of the beautiful girl. One is a 'sexual desire' which attracts those that are attracted. Another is a 'relational message' which attracts those that can relate to the character. In automobile commercials we very often see a man to attract men who want to be that kind of man and in a beer commercial we often see a beautiful girl who attracts the man. Why? Well the difference basically is something like this. For a car, it takes a lot of thinking and contemplating whtehr or not we are going to buy that car. If we use an emotional stimulus the emotion will be gone before we buy the car. However a beer is very easy to purchase on an emotional whim and it's not something that we have to think about so much so emotional advertising does work. Who are you selling to?
